A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink

1. Summer Assignment Q & A
Q- Have you graded everything????
A- Um, no. But I'm close! You will get an itemized grade sheet with your cumulative summer grades by Friday. Really! On Friday, I want to work with your synthesis essays in class a bit. Relax! I know this was your first attempt at a synthesis essay. You will have plenty of opportunities to work on this type of writing.
Q-I had a crazy summer and missed one of the assignments! Do I have to change my schedule?
A- No. I won't kick you out because you missed one assignment, provided you can get that assignment to me ASAP (as in by Wednesday). Understand that I will have to deduct points from your grade.
Q-So, are we doing anything else with this book? I loved it so much; I can't get enough!!!!!
A- We are going to work directly with this book this week. I will pull some passages to look at Pink's writing style. We will discuss his use of pathos, logos, and ethos. By the end of the week, we will also be looking at our own synthesis essays in order to evaluate our own claims.
2. Quiz!!!

Textbooks! (What? Did you say, "Textbooks?") That's right! Textbooks!

You're getting your AP English Language textbook today. Relax, there's no way we will read the entire book! It's only a resource: The world is our oyster, and we can explore anything we want.

You Decide!

I need your help in deciding what BIG IDEAS we want to explore together this year. So, cast your vote by completing the poll below. It's going to be tough, but you have to narrow the list to your top ten votes. Feel free to write in a topic that's not included.

Before you vote, take some time to thumb through your book. Scan the table of contents to see what texts are linked to each big idea. You may want to skim and scan the first page of each chapter, which gives an overview of the topic. Some of the poll choices aren't in the book!
